the deepest most luxurious massage on the planet ... comes to long island

What is Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage Therapy?

Also known as Ashiatsu, (Ashi means “foot” and atsu means “pressure”) is a massage technique that dates back as far as the 12th century. Massaging the body with the feet is a hallmark of bodywork throughout India, Japan, China, Thailand, Africa and the Philippines. We invite you to experience this massage technique that is rich in historic culture. In today’s more Americanized version of Barefoot Ashiatsu, the therapist uses an overhead system of hand-held bars for balance. Clean, soft feet will apply deep compression and long flowing strokes to bring about structural change in chronically tight muscle tissue, while invoking a state of deep relaxation. This unique deep pressure work is performed with soothing strokes that are applied to the body using hand and foot pressure to milk the muscles, innervate the lymphatic system and melt the stress. The pressure will be deeper than traditional massage, without any pain or discomfort. Well-known resorts, such as Ritz Carlton and Canyon Ranch have incorporated this modality into their menu of services. Individual, couples and groups sessions are available.

Who will benefit from a Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage?

These techniques are ideal for those who desire a gratifying and results-driven treatment, those who have chronic lower and upper back pain, mild scoliosis or sciatica, physically fit individuals, larger clients, athletes, and those who can never get enough pressure in a massage. Clients seeking improved posture and movement, pain relief and a state of well being, should consider Ashiatsu. Ashiatsu massage also addresses tight or painful hamstrings, calf muscles, quadriceps, tight IT Bands, tight forearms and so much more! Clients with laminectomy, lordosis, kyphosis, fusion or rods can often benefit from a Barefoot Ashiatsu Massage Session ...and those who want serious bragging rights at the water cooler!

What is the biggest difference between a Deep, Swedish Massage and Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage?

The amount of even pressure that is applied to the body in barefoot massage can rarely be done by the hands. Since the foot is bigger, it covers more tissue, with the result that greater pressure can be applied without bruising the client, and can be held for an extended period of time, thus stimulating a larger area at one time and increasing a larger amount of circulation. Many clients swear they will never go back to traditional massage after experiencing Ashiatsu.
50 and 75 minute sessions are available.

Prior to your session

Please plan on arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your session in order to ensure that your session starts on time.  Please address any questions or concerns regarding Barefoot Ashiatsu Massage or your health at the front desk, prior to your session. Should you have any of the following contraindications please call ahead of time to make sure massage is appropriate: INFLAMMATION, SEVERE PAIN, OPEN CUTS, BRUISES, BURNS, HEADACHE, SKIN RASH, SUNBURN, FEVER, COLD OR FLU. What is the difference between the types of sessions?

The Knot” So Basic, Basic Session and “Bliss” include Barefoot Ashiatsu complimented with Lavender and Chamomile Eye Tea Bags, Aromatherapy and strategically placed heat packs.
Our A Step Above” and Euphoria” sessions also include signature rituals designed to engage your senses and transform your body and spirit on multiple levels.

Privacy

Your privacy is insured by the long, flowing drapes that separate The Quiet Room into smaller massage areas. Sounds and scents can penetrate. Your therapist will show you to your table and proceed to close the drapery so that you may disrobe in private. You will lay face down and cover yourself with the extra large towel. Your therapist will adjust your towel for better coverage and comfort. Conversation should be very limited, if at all. Whispering and respecting others is greatly appreciated.

Draping

You will be covered with a towel and only the portions of the body being worked on are uncovered and the genital area is always covered. Barefoot Ashiatsu Massage addresses many areas at the same time, therefore it may feel like you are draped less than a Standard Swedish Massage. You can expect a lot of work on the biggest (bulkiest) of the skeletal muscles, the Gluteus Maximus, the buttock muscle. Our therapists have mastered the “art of draping” however,
Barefoot Deep Tissue Massage is not recommended for the modest or novice.

Body Areas

Your Barefoot Ashiatsu Massage will include work on your neck, shoulders, arms, hands, back, hips, legs and feet.  It does not include work on the face or scalp, unless done with the hands. It may include some limited work on the chest and abdominal area, however it will not be part of a first session. We consider these areas permission oriented.

Ahhh…shiatsu

Please get up slowly after your session. Take a moment to reorient yourself. If you have received a 75 minute session, an additional 5 minutes of time has been allotted for you to rest. If you are sleeping, we will wake you gently with the sound of a small bell. Ahhhh…

After Your Session

Drink extra fluids that do not contain caffeine or alcohol. This will help prolong the effects of the massage. The fluids will help the muscles stay "looser" longer. In addition, it will help flush the accumulated chemicals that were released. The treatment consists of working the muscles. It can sometimes feel like a work out for you as well. Feeling a little sore afterwards is not uncommon, although it is less common then after a deep tissue Swedish massage. We hope you will find time before or after your session to unwind and possibly even enjoy a foot soak (they're absolutely tantalizing) during your visit. Teas, water and coffee are available.

Gratuities

Please note that most gift certificates do not include a gratuity. Should you wish to leave a gratuity, about 15-20 percent is customary, but you may of course leave more or less, depending on the quality of the service. You may leave it at the reception desk when you pay your bill or give it directly to the therapist. Be assured your therapist will receive 100% of the gratuity.
